Service is one of the key aspects of both the Middle Years Programme and the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program at Lexington Middle. Through our unit plans in class, clubs and athletics, learner profile traits, and the service cycle we are trying to instill a desire to serve the greater community. We want our students and staff to remember that in order to fulfill our mission "to become compassionate, lifelong learners with an intercultural understanding and respect," we need to take an active role in the world around us.
The eighth-grade community project is meant to serve as a demonstration of what our students are capable of as a result of their time at Lexington. Students complete the project by themselves or in groups no larger than three. While the project will be introduced in US History classes, it is not a class project or assignment. Projects will be scored using specific rubrics for each phase of the community project. The rubrics are available in the resources documents linked below and in the pacing guide. Students have a faculty supervisor who will help ensure that students stay safe during the project. Students will also regularly check-in with their supervisor regarding their progress.
We recognize how powerful and impressive our students are and acknowledge the positive impact they can make on their communities. There are a variety of ways to demonstrate this through the project and we hope the resources below will prove helpful.
