LXMS Dress Code

 

Lexington values the growth and safety of all our students and staff. Appropriate dress supports this value by ensuring a safe and academically focused learning environment that results in positive student development.

 

The School Board of Lee County defines the overall guidelines for the student dress code in Board Policy 5.24 and gives the individual schools the authority to establish additional regulations. 

 

TOPS

  • All shirts must have a collar, polo or oxford style and sleeves OR be a Lexington Middle t-shirt. 
  • Shirts must be properly buttoned. 
  • Shirts must provide appropriate coverage; lace, see-through fabrics, holes, excessively tight fitting, or bare midriffs are not allowed.
  • Jackets must have a zippered or buttoned front from top to bottom and must be completely unzipped/unbuttoned. 
  • No pullover sweatshirts, sweaters, or hoodies.

BOTTOMS  

  • Students may wear school appropriate pants, jeans, skirts, and shorts in any color/print.
  • Pants, jeans, and shorts must be properly fastened, buttoned, zipped, and worn at the natural waistline.
  • Bottoms may not be too baggy or excessively tight and must be free from holes, rips, or tears.
  • Shorts, skorts, skirts, and dresses must be no shorter than just above the knee.
  • Sweatpants, joggers, athletic joggers, pajama pants, and athletic shorts are not allowed.
  • Spandex, leggings, jeggings, tights, and yoga pants are not allowed.

FOOTWEAR

  • Shoes must be worn at all times and must be closed toe and have a back.
  • Flip flops, slippers, sports sandals, Crocs, slides, and all other backless shoes are not allowed.  

THE FOLLOWING ARE NOT ALLOWED

  • Visible undergarments.
  • For the health and safety of all, perfumes, body sprays, and other spray items may not be brought to school. 
  • Writing on clothing OR the face, arms, hands, and legs. 
  • Clothing with holes, rips, and tears.
  • Any articles of clothing or jewelry that could cause injury, including but not limited to belt chains, wallet chains, bracelets, rings, chokers, any spiked item, studded item or medallions.
  • Clothing that uses or depicts hate speech and targets groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, or any other protected groups.
  • Clothing that promotes the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or any other illegal activity.
  • Clothing, bandanas, emblems, insignias, badges or symbols that include or are used as gang identifiers.
  • Any method of public display (including clothing, nail polish, and other items that may be worn or carried)  of an organization affiliated with controversial, obscene, or illegal activities. 
  • Piercings to body parts other than the ears, such as, but not limited to tongues, eyebrows, lip and nose piercings. Ears may be pierced. 
  • Distractive hairstyles including shaved designs in hair and eyebrows.
  • Hats, caps, headgear, bandanas, hoods, sweatbands or sunglasses. There may be certain exceptions for medical conditions and/or physical education classes being held outside. The administration will determine these exceptions.

Dress code infractions will be addressed following the Lee County Schools Student Code of Conduct. 


The administration reserves the right to make adjustments to support the safety and wellbeing of all students and staff.
