Unified Champion School

LXMS is officially a

Special Olympics Unified Champion School!

Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools is an education and sports-based strategy powered by an engaged youth community that increases athletic and leadership opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities, while creating communities of acceptance for all.

Unified Champion Schools activities are made up of three main components:

  • Inclusive Sports: Sports participation involving people with and without intellectual disabilities
  • Youth Leadership: Newly formed clubs or an existing school club which plan/carry out activities for/with Special Olympics athletes.
  • Whole School Engagement: Campaign(s) to encourage acceptance of people with intellectual disabilities and educate students about this population through activities such as pledge drives and other school activities.

LXMS will be participating in Unified Basketball in the Fall & Unified Track in the Winter/Spring. Coaches: M. Millage, B. Millage, M. Hagen

  • Basketball – will begin with practices during school for 6 weeks and then games could be played beginning in November. We will start out by having mini games during the day to get the students used to playing. Then we will play games with Cypress & Dunbar. Each team consists of students with intellectual or developmental disabilities (“athletes”) and students without intellectual or developmental disabilities (“partners”).
  • Track – will begin with practices in January and a Countywide Unified Track Meet in March.

The goal is to teach our entire school about inclusion and to help break down barriers that have historically kept students apart and how that is achieved through Unified Sports.
